OCSS Launch Party review, May 2011

Launch Party: An Enjoyable Day For All

The first official event of the newly founded Oxford Czech and Slovak Society was a major success. Over 50 attendees showed up throughout the afternoon and evening dedicated to the OCSS Launch Party on Friday 13th 2011 held at St John’s College in Oxford. We registered 39 members on that day and expect the numbers to continue rising throughout this year. We had people from all spheres of Oxford life including students and staff of the University of Oxford as well as visitors and residents of the city. Apart from Czechs and Slovaks we even attracted a few other nationalities including English, Swedish and even Japanese.

Naturally, one of the major attractions to our visitors was an excellent selection of Czech beers and other alcoholic beverages as well as delicious Czech and Slovak food specialities and snacks generously provided by our Official Food Delivery Partner Halusky.co.uk. Our bar was open from 3pm till 11pm and was full at all times, keeping our barman/snack distributor Vit Sipal very busy. On top of informal gathering and cheerful chatter, we also had a number of activities planned for the day. Kicking off with a memorable Ice Hockey World Championship semi‐final game Czech Republic vs. Sweden shortly after 3pm, we continued with the Czech‐Slovak Pub Quiz, which was organized by Petr Sulc and Daniel Bundala. We separated into many teams with humorous names which all competed for valuable prizes: among other things, free parcel delivery by our Official Transport Partner Teahouse Transport and Studentska Pecet chocolate bars, both in high demand.

As a part of this evening we managed to squeeze in some official business and organized our first annual general meeting, during which our first committee was elected by an overwhelming majority. We handed out information about our future events and advantages of OCSS membership.

We wish to express our gratitude to our partners, members and everyone who expressed their interest in the OCSS and our activities. We look forward to a great future of this wonderful new society.
